What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer globally. It begins in the skin cells and is often caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Skin cancer can occur in any part of the body, but it is more common on areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, arms, and hands.

Types of Skin Cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, usually appearing as a small, shiny bump or a red patch of skin.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often presents as a firm, red nodule or a flat lesion with a scaly crust.
  • Melanoma: The most dangerous form of skin cancer, it often appears as a new mole or a change in an existing mole’s color, shape, or size.

Symptoms of Skin Cancer

  • New growths or changes to existing moles or skin lesions.
  • Itchy, painful, or bleeding spots on the skin.
  • Ulcers that don’t heal.
  • Changes in the size, shape, or color of moles.

Risk Factors

  • Excessive Sun Exposure: Sunburns, particularly during childhood, increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.
  • Tanning Beds: Use of tanning beds increases the risk, especially in younger people.
  • Fair Skin: Individuals with lighter skin and a history of sunburns are at higher risk.
  • Family History: Those with a family history of skin cancer are more likely to develop it.
  • Weak Immune System: People with weakened immune systems, such as those on immunosuppressive medications, are at higher risk.
